Not Another Super Bowl Post

Ok…yes it is. I watched the Super Bowl tonight. I am not a huge football fan. I will not be like many of my coworkers, who, tomorrow, will start to feel football withdrawal. The symptoms are actually identical to that of heroin recovery:

The symptoms of football withdrawal (opiates) are

• Anxiety and strong desire for football.
• Watery eyes, watery discharge from the nose, and yawning
• Dilated (enlarged) pupils of the eyes, loss of appetite, shakes, hot and cold flashes, and aching of your whole body
• Severe shakes, hot and cold flashes, aching, fever, high blood pressure, fast pulse, and rapid breathing
• Diarrhea, vomiting, low blood pressure, and dehydration.

(taken from heroin-withdrawal.com. hooray for internet)

While I myself do not follow football closely, or watch it during the regular season, I do watch the Super Bowl. I am not one of the many who watch it “just for the commercials.” Which is actually a good thing, since all of the commericals sucked this year (ok, the Etrade baby was funny, but that’s it). I enjoy Playoffs of any kind. World Cup, NBA Championships, World Series, Stanley Cup, Olympic Curling Finals…all of it. It’s pretty much the best reality TV that one can find. This isn’t hard, given how much all reality TV really sucks. Really…all of it…really sucks.

That being said, the only thing I wanted out of this game was for the Patriots to lose. Not because I hate the Patriots. Not because they probably cheated. Not because Bill Bellicheck (spelling?) is awful. I wanted them to lose because that would be interesting. What’s interesting about the Patriots beating the Giants. Sure…19-0…undefeated…first time in NFL history…but would any of us have been surprised. The game would have ended and a resounding “eh..” would have poured forth. Big deal. So they beat the Giants….again.

But for the Giants to win…WHOOOO BOY! That was something to watch. The lead changing 3 times in the 4th quarter – the Giants defense stopping the number one offense in the NFL – 10 points scored in the first half – Giants come back after being behind at the half (the eighth time in super bowl history for such an event) – ALL OF THAT…is interesting, and makes for good television. And that’s really all I wanted. So thank you, Super Bowl, for not sucking.

…even though the commercials totally did.

One other thing…

What was the deal with Tom Petty? Is it just me or did he resemble the broken shell of Tom Petty…with a beard…than the Tom Petty I know? Regardless…this was better than Justin/Janet or Britney/Aerosmith. I’ll devote the next immediate post to the subject.
